Broch of Burland

An excellent broch, very near to high cliffs. The entrance is treacherous, being under a metre from a fatal drop. Much detail remains visible, including cells, possible stairway remains and lots of exterior stonework festooned with Old Man's Beard. Surprisingly, this remarkable site has not yet been excavated, other than a section through the external ditches (see [2]).
Three tremendous ditches cut across the narrow cliff top and would have effectively cut the broch off from access.
A possible gateway through these ramparts may be suspected by looking at their shape and one or two visible stones.
