This coastal broch has been damaged in part by the sea. What remains is in fairly good condition, showing clear chambers and 2-3m high walls. Just behind the broch are more recent houses(?) probably built from broch-stone. An interesting observation is that the walls of this broch appear to have been built into an excavation on the north side. This may of course just be a build up of soil over the years as opposed to an original feature.
It is interesting to note that the Norse word for fort is 'Virkie'.
[1] The broch was excavated in 1989, radiocarbon dating of finds suggests the site was in use between 2000BC and 410AD.
[2] The sea may have breached the outer wall of the broch as recently as 1937
