BROCH

Circled by water,
they built circles of stone

in hope blood-tides
might break upon them,

these currents carrying
invaders to coastline

dashed on rocks
hauled to shore

up their frail existence,
hoping to escape

the bitter light of battle,
the ebb and flow of war.
