Weather:
The morning was windy at force 5 south-easterly; the icy rain and cutting wind was coming from behind us. By early afternoon, the rain had mostly petered out and the sky was brightening nicely. The wind fell light to give us a lovely walk back.
Spot Height:
70m

We drove up to Sandvoe and parked the Jeep at the cemetary. At around 10:30 am we set off westward toward the isle of Uyea, loosely following a bearing of 288 degrees. In the summer, Pettadale Burn and its valley would be a lovely place to camp, although the ground was totally waterlogged when we were there. Just on the eastern side of North Hill there is a ruined homestead (around 332918 approx.) - we arrived here at noon and cowered from the wind for a spot of lunch.
Continuing on over The Breck, we descended onto the plain leading to Uyea itself. We used climbing harnesses and rope to descend on to the sand on the west side of The Ness (there is a fenced sheep corridor leading sharply downwards). Perhaps people have been down there without rope, but I wouldn't fancy trying it as I don't have a head for heights.
We got down on to the sand at about 2pm, shortly after high tide. What an amazing place down there! There are lots of little corridors of rock and sand that become accessible as the tide drops, plus a beach at the north-east side that can be accessed depending on tide. We climbed onto Uyea and spent about 45 minutes, going right up to the highest point of 70m where the views were once again spectacular.
On returning to the sand, we had a leisurely lunch and exploration of the area. The swell was pretty high, giving rise to some impressive surf - this was quite mesmerising to watch.
We went back the way we came arriving back at the Jeep at 5pm.
